Rosetta, a new bakery and patisserie in Montreal’s Saint-Henri district, is first and foremost a family affair. Owners Maria Cammaleri and her son Rocco wanted to pay homage to Maria’s mother with an eponymous business, and by integrating Italian traditions into the production and sale of products.
BV Design has come up with a clean, simple design to showcase the patisseries, presenting them almost as jewels. The only decoration in the shop tells the story of Madame Rosetta, with a large portrait of her and other period photos. This immediately draws the customer into the warm, human atmosphere of the bakery. This is how tradition meets modernity, making Rosetta a very pleasant place to have a coffee and a chat.
Drawing on their experience with Rococo pastry shops, Maria and Rocco offer products made with locally sourced, preservative-free ingredients. In keeping with this value of purity, the design is based on noble materials such as marble and wood. Removable furniture not only showcases the products, but also proposes a new approach to production functionality. The wall-mounted displays can be removed and transported to the ovens, to be filled directly in the kitchen.
Designer Benjamin Van den Eede also has a playful side, and it’s in the wackier bathroom that he has had fun mixing exotic fauna and solid wood. He also likes to get his hands dirty, and even made the vanity furniture himself. Communication and trust between customers and designer took the concept a step further, and gave the bakery and patisserie a unique, personalized touch.
